We sell bare-root and potted plants. The potted plants are generally larger and come rooted in a pot of our compost based potting soil. There is a chance there are jumping worms in the potting soil. Bare-root plants are less expensive and only available until late April. They have no soil (no potential worms), and need to be planted promptly.
What are bare-root plants? They are just that: dormant, healthy plants with little or no soil on their roots. They need to be planted promptly but can be kept several days if the roots are kept cool and moist (not freezing). Bare-root trees are a great value and perform well.
There are several species and varieties we do not offer as bare-roots, including hardy kiwi, honeyberry, and seaberry. You can access our full offerings through the website, including potted items. In some cases we have both bare-root and potted versions of the same varieties
Order early, we anticipate many items may sell out.
Ordering:
All plants must be pre-ordered by March 25 and picked up at the nursery at your chosen time-slot on either April 19-21 or April 26-28. Please be sure to schedule your pick-up slot using the link in the confirmation email you will receive after placing your order. If no available slots will work for you, you may be able to make a special arrangement by emailing easthilltreefarm@gmail.com.
Orders will be filled in the order they are received. Late orders will be considered depending on our availability and capacity. Additional plants will be for sale at the nursery when you come to pick up your order.
Please reach out to us if you have any questions with regards to your order or plant choices.
We will have remaining plants potted and for sale the rest of the season, from May through July. The best availability is through this pre-order bare-root sale.
Picking up:
Please arrive during the 1-hr window of your chosen pick-up time.
We can certainly accommodate last-minute rescheduling and late arrivals, but your plants will receive more handling and spend time in the sun and air instead of their preferred storage. Arriving during the time-slot you select allows our team to keep everyone's plants in optimal storage until just before their arrival, creating the smoothest pickup experience for plants and people alike. Thank you!
Park along the road or pull into the driveway if there is space.
Most orders should fit comfortably in a station wagon or hatchback vehicle.
Please bring materials to wrap the roots of your trees if you have them; a tarp or old large plastic sheets or bags work well. Most shrubs are already bagged. We will also have plenty of materials on hand if needed.
Bare root plants want to be planted promptly. They will be OK for a few days if the roots are kept cool and damp. Burying the roots in a pile of mulch, compost or some loose soil in a garden bed works well. Please be sure to read our Resources page for additional tips on planting!
If you'd like to buy additional plants when you pick up, you can do that! We hope to be able to answer your questions and help you find any additional plants or materials you are looking for.
Substitutions:
Sometimes an item you order does not end up being available. This can happen when we sell out of an item between the time when you place your order and when it is processed (usually for paper orders received by mail), or when the variabilities of farming mean our spring bare root inventory is not exactly what we thought in the fall. Our generic policy is to substitute with a similar item when available (e.g. a different similar variety of blueberry), and to refund that item if there is nothing similar that we can substitute. Refunds will be processed at the time of pick-up, so you can decide whether you want to receive a cash refund or choose a different item to purchase on-site with your credit.
If you know you do not want any kind of substitutions, please check the "no substitutions please" box on the View Cart page and we will refund the missing item(s).
Discounts:
We have a number of bulk discounts, check this link for details. Very large orders may ask about a discount. We also can often provide discounts or donations to local community, school, or non-profit groups.
If your planting fails:
We work hard to ensure the plants we sell are ready to succeed and that you have the information you need to get them off to a good start. If the plants fail to leaf out due to something on our end, we are sorry, and we will offer a replacement or credit equal to the price paid for the plant.
