Plant type
Berry Hill is a wild VT variety selected by Lewis Hill. It is a great grower, hardy, vigorous and productive with smallish, very dark berries. It does well with heavy pruning, removing most or all wood over 2 years old.

Elderberries are prized for their medicinal value as an immune tonic. They are great for birds and beneficial insects including parasitoid wasps. They seem to like growing near human activity and attention, alongside a shed, barn or compost pile is often a good spot.

Elderberries thrive in well loosened soil with lots of organic matter, they like moist soil but do not want to be in saturated or anaerobic soil. Mulch well to keep back choking grasses. They tolerate some shade but will produce best with more sun. Plant 2 or more different varieties for best fruit set. Plants should begin to produce two years after planting.
