Quercus macrocarpa
Bur oak is an extremely hardy and adaptable species of white oak. In time, it will grow into a broad, massive, stately tree. There is a remarkable maybe 200 year old specimen in East Montpelier. They want to be here, all we have to do is plant them.
(Quercus spp.) Oaks are coming, oaks are here! We love planting oaks. Long lived, hardy, self-fertile. Oaks are a TREMENDOUS resource for all sorts of wildlife, insects, birds, and mammals. Oaks are adaptable and long lived but will perform best in reasonably well drained soil. Many oaks thrive in Central Vermont. White oak types (including bur) are less common, migrate more slowly and are preferred by wildlife. Plan for a very big tree!
