Though not widely known in Vermont, the hackberry (celtis occidentalis) is an excellent landscape tree native to eastern North America. It might fill the spot where a gracious elm once stood, with a similar vase-shaped canopy and oval, toothed leaves. It thrives in a wide variety of soils and is relatively tolerant of drought, flood, and air pollution. It hosts several butterfly species and its small edible winter berries feed waxwings and robins.
