Ninebark is a cold hardy, tough, native shrub for mixed borders. Pinkish-white flower clusters in late spring become persistent attractive seed capsules. Exfoliating bark adds to the seasonal interest. 

Fast growing. Unbothered by deer. great for pollinators. You can let it go wild or prune it, cutting out old stems or resetting it right to the ground every few years.

It's in the rose family, along with apples, pears, juneberries and, of course, roses.
